A spring has broken

You will have heard a bang, and the door will be far too heavy to lift. Do not use the opener - it is not built to lift an unsprung door, and you will strip the gear or bend the top section. Leave the door where it is. If your car is inside, it stays inside until someone comes.

The door is off track

Stop immediately. Do not run the opener to try to reseat it. In the older central neighbourhoods, forcing an off-track door bends narrow original track and tears the anchoring out of century-old jambs, which turns a repair into a replacement.

The door is frozen down

Common here after freezing rain. Break the ice bond along the bottom seal first with warm water and a plastic scraper, then lift. Using the opener to break the bond is how cables snap and bottom sections bend.

The door is stuck open overnight

If it will not close and cannot be secured, the manual release lets you lower it by hand - but only if the springs are intact. If a spring is broken, the door is too heavy to lower safely and should be left up.
